Urban
League of Rhode Island
"My name is
Shirley Padula and I began attending the Urban League
of Rhode Island’s Education, Employment & Training
Unit GED Program in 2000. In December 2001, I completed
all my testing requirements for my GED certificate.
My GED instructor, Mr. Frank Fernandes, was an inspiration
because he helped my out tremendously. If it wasn’t
for Frank and the Administrative Assistant Miss Shirley Rucker
encouraging me not to quit when I was getting frustrated,,
I wouldn’t be where I am at today, and I thank
them for that.
After obtaining my GED, Frank helped me get into the College
Readiness Program at the University of Rhode Island.
The Urban League of Rhode Island has done so much for
me that, to show my gratitude and appreciation, I volunteer
my services to help the League in any way that I can.”
Literacy Volunteers of Rhode Island
"The reason I became one of the
Literacy Volunteers students is the same as millions
of people. We want to learn English
and use it to find jobs, to communicate in our daily
life, etc. Reading, speaking and writing are very important
for
foreign people who live in their new country. Since
I work with my tutor, I have learned so many things
from
her.
She teaches not only English but also things about
American culture.” (Somsri Ketmukda),
Dorcas Place Workplace Literacy Program
Jeanne realized that quitting school in
her senior year left her unprepared to support herself
and her children.
The Workplace Literacy Program has given her opportunities
to make the leap from welfare to the workplace. “I
love this program,” she said. “I now realize
what life is and what I have to do to get on with my
life, and Dorcas Place is making it possible.”
Caren Perry, 51, said, “I am getting my GED at the
same time I am learning computer skills. You can’t
get anywhere without at least a GED and you have to
know about computers if you want to get a clerical
job.”
