Reading and writing are two of the most important skills that any individual needs to survive in this world. There are a few tips that parents can do to improve, enhance, and motivate their children to learn to love reading and writing.
It is a good idea to set aside some time each day to spend reading. When children are young it helps to read out loud, this will help with voice inflection and understanding different words, which will expand their vocabulary.
Another thought is to surround children with lots of material, but also diverse material. Depending on age range, books, magazines, recipe books, and so on will give them the option to choose what interests them, and will keep their attention. Comprehension tends to be difficult when they are not able to concentrate on a subject they don’t like or understand.
Get the whole family involved. Take around fifteen minutes each day to sit quietly, whole family, and read. This will show them that the family enjoys reading, and that reading is an important activity for all to do.
Other ways to get kids involved in reading is reading everything that has words! When you go to a restaurant, you have menus. Have fun with them finding random words, sounding out different words and so on. As you are driving, play the ABC game of finding something that starts with every letter of the alphabet.
The library is a great way to inspire them. The library has every kind of reading material your child could possibly want to read. It can be a fun trip that you do each week as a family. It becomes fun for the child because they can pick out their own material. This also helps to encourage their individuality.
Starting this at a young age will also help to spot any problems that a child may have such as dyslexia. This will help to get assistance right away if there are any issues.
