Education is the backbone upon which the character and growth of a child depends. Starting from the tender age of 3 to a stage where the child grows up to be a college student, if anything that could be said to distinguish one person from the other it is most likely to be education. Education should be fun and it should instill a sense of pride and inquisitiveness in the child. Any education system that is monotonous and a drag on the student would not stand the test of time.
The child may pretend to be obedient and attentive but it would have put a iron curtain preventing any inflow of information and knowledge. One more thing which education should ensure is that it should be a source of knowledge gathering rather than being more grade and marks oriented. It would be naïve and ignorant on our part to gauge a student just by his or her marks and grade alone.
Today’s child is much different from the child which was born say 30 to 40 years ago. Today’s child is more exposed to the electronic and other media and information is more freely available to the child. In such a situation it would be wrong to stick on to the old school of thought as far as teaching is concerned. We should try and migrate to more advanced methods of teaching, which is more student centric and which goads the child to think and rationalize.
This is a tough task and calls for lot of research and brain storming on part of the teachers and schools. As parents we also have a big role to play in the development of the child in today’s information era. We should in the least be computer literate and should be in a position to spend some time with the child on the computer.
